Match Report | Wigan Warriors | Round 3

Huddersfield Giants were beaten in a tough battle 30-16 at the DW Stadium by Wigan Warriors.

Ian Watson made one change to the side that was defeated last time out, with the inclusion of Jake Connor after a concussion that had ruled him out previously.

Wigan came out of the blocks the faster out of the two teams, with an opening try from winger Liam Marshall, who was denied at first, but the second time stepped Sam Hewitt to score.

Another try came soon after, with a quick break from Adam Keighran who offloaded to Bevan French, racing underneath the posts.

Wigan crossed again in a miserable opening twenty minutes for Ian Watson’s men, Liam Marshall scoring again with an Adam Milner sin-binning in-between.

The Giants got their first points of the game through Elliot Wallis, who finished in the corner from Adam Clune’s cut out pass.

The scores stood at 18-4, and with seconds remaining Wigan found themselves down to 12, with Adam Keighran kicking the ball away to prevent a quick tap 20m restart, the hooter sounding immediately after with Huddersfield behind at the break.

Adam Swift scored his first professional try minutes into the second half, as a superb offload from Esan Marsters saw him dive over in the corner, minutes later however Liam Marshall completed his hat-trick.

In a much-improved half for the Giants, in which they restricted the Warriors side to minimal attacks and metres, with the scores standing at 22-10, the game was poised going into the last twenty minutes.

The Giants pushed on the Wigan line, but as Elliot Wallis looked to push a high kick back to Kevin Naiqama, it was intercepted and Liam Farrell raced up field, eventually winning a penalty which Harry Smith converted, 24-10.

As Wigan conceded a penalty for offside, it gave the Giants an attacking platform, which saw on the last, Jai Field not take an Adam Clune high kick and Jack Murchie caught the loose ball and scored his first professional Giants try.

Olly Russell added the two from his boot, leaving him at 2/3 on the evening, and the Giants in reach of Wigan.

However, it wasn’t to be, as the Giants looked to spread the ball through Jake Connor on one last push, Jack Murchie fumbled the ball and on the resulting set, Tyler Dupree crashed over and sealed the game for Wigan.

It was a tough old battle out there for the Giants, with a poor first twenty minutes ultimately the undoing of Ian Watson’s men who battled much better in the second half.
